MRI Compatibility

At some point in the future, you may need a magnetic resonance image (MRI) scan to diagnose an illness or injury. When you have an implanted electronic device, like a spinal cord stimulation system, a specific process must be followed. MRI scans are possible with the Algovita® SCS System with proper safeguards.1

Before Your MRI

1. Tell the doctor who prescribed your MRI scan that you have an implanted Algovita SCS System.

2. Contact your pain specialist to discuss your upcoming MRI scan. Your pain specialist may also provide your radiologist with a copy of the MRI Procedure Guidelines. The information in the guidelines can help the radiologist confirm your eligibility for the prescribed MRI scan.

3. Schedule your MRI appointment. You will need to bring the following with you to your appointment:

  • Your patient ID card
  • Copy of the MRI Procedure Guidelines
  • Your Patient Programmer Charger (PPC) with at least two bars of battery and your Charging Paddle
  • Your IPG must also be charged with at least two bars of battery

3. Turn off stimulation. Use your Pocket Programmer (PoP) or Patient Programmer Charger (PPC) to turn off stimulation before you enter an MRI environment.

After Your MRI

Exposure to an MR environment will place your stimulator in storage mode. When it is in storage mode, the stimulator will not deliver stimulation and will not establish a connection to the Patient Programmer Charger or the Pocket Programmer (PoP). After you are out of the MR environment, charge your stimulator briefly (less than a minute) to bring it out of storage mode. Once your stimulator is out of storage mode, you will be able to resume using it. Refer to Appendix A for step-by-step instructions.
